DIWAH Review: Ever Wanted to Design your own Jewellery?

Since I was very little I’ve always loved to have a nice piece of jewellery to wear. Then years ago I had a cleared out my jewellery box, donated most and left some at my parents house to use when they’re playing dress-up (my children, not my parents, but you never know!). The pieces I kept were ones that meant something to me, only a few pieces which had been given as gifts, were made of precious metals and generally went with most outfits. I didn’t feel the need back then to have plenty of jewellery. I wanted a simple selection of pieces I can throw on while I go about my mothering duties.

Now my littles ones are older, I’ve found myself again. I’m no longer in the fog of having a baby and I’m taking much more pride in my appearance and style. I’m naturally a girly girl and it feels good to be able to dress the part. So after losing all of my costume jewellery, I’ve been wanting to gradually add a few new pieces. I wanted a few various styles that can be mixed and matched with different outfits and also pieces that are very good quality.

The only thing I’ve bought was a necklace from Marks & Spencer. The plainest thing you could ever imagine and it was in the sale, so it was a safe bet for me. That was all until recently when I collaborated with a company called DIWAH. They’re a bespoke jewellery designer that I’d never heard of before and they wanted a few bloggers to review their services and products.

I was very excited to work with DIWAH because they have a unique aspect to their business, which is being able to design your necklace yourself. This is perfect for those who have a particular style in mind, or a particular budget. But don’t worry if you don’t feel very creative because they have a beautiful collection of ready-made bespoke jewellery to choose from.

Why I Chose This Design

If you want to have a necklace created just for you, you can either design your own or fill out a form to have one designed for you. You’ll share your preferences and personality style in the form and DIWAH send you a selection of unique designs based on what you’ve put.

I like to get what I can from a service and discover all options available before committing to a purchase. So I used their design service and I also created my own.

These were the gorgeous designs created for me. I’d said that I like simple and sophisticated. Which is the complete opposite of what I ended up creating!

My Design

Untitled design (9)diwah design

I had spent days designing my own necklace. It became a little addictive, I kept tweaking designs before scrapping it completely and starting again. I showed Mr Firstooth my final design and surprised would be an understatement to his reaction. It was a lot out of my comfort zone. I really wanted to design a piece that would ‘wow’, but could also be mixed in with a variety of outfits.

It’s no secret that I love colour, so I wanted a necklace that reflected this. I chose a variety of different colours. This means if I wanted to wear a yellow jacket, it would match. But it would also match blue, pink, green and plain colours. So although it’s a vibrant and eclectic choice of colours, I like to think it’s versatile. So you’ll probably see me wearing this at every opportunity!

The Design Process

Like I said, designing the necklace became addictive, and it took me a few days before I had a design I fell in love with. So if you’re indecisive like me, then be prepared for a lengthy design process. It’s certainly worth it though.

You can choose a variety of styles which best suit how you’d like to design your necklace. It varies from Punk all the way to Classic. I chose candy, the beads and stones really attracted me to this selection.

You also need to decide the style of necklace. Whether you like a short choker-style design, a long pendant drop or a mid-length drop. There are plenty of style to choose from and it’s great to have a little play around with each one. Every step is completely personalized to your style.

The next step to design your DIWAH necklace is the best yet most frustrating part. The beads are so lovely, it’s difficult to narrow it down to a select few. I ended up choosing a variety of bead styles, sizes and colours. I also decided to graduate the bead size around the necklace. So the smaller beads were near the top and the larger beads would hang around my neck, next to the pendant.

I scrapped dozens of designs before settling on my bright and colourful creation. Then I spent a lot of time adding intricate details, like tiny spacing beads, choosing the right pendant and which clasp I’d like.

The clasp I chose not only looks really stylish but is so handy. I’ve never been a fan of those fussy clasps. This clasp is magnetic so it goes on with a quick snap.

Overall, the design process was made unnecessarily long by myself, but was really easy and fun to navigate. I spent a lot of time looking at other designs DIWAH have to offer and taking inspiration from many of them.

Working with DIWAH

The ladies at DIWAH were so lovely and incredibly helpful. If you need a hand designing your necklace they’re very friendly and also respond extremely quickly. Which is brilliant customer service. They took a lot of time creating different designs for me to choose from and really understood my style. They also weren’t offended at all when I decided not to use their designs and went with my crazy creation instead.

They sent me pictures and updates of the design process, which made me even more excited to receive it in it’s beautifully packaged box.

Price

Because DIWAH creates bespoke jewellery, that is hand-made, unique and a one-off, it naturally warrants a slightly higher price tag. The neckalce I created cost £72, but if you have a smaller budget then there are plenty of purse-friendly creations to choose from. Or you can create your own necklace and stop adding accessories once it hits your budget.

There is another necklace in the romance collection which is less than £40, it’s certainly romanced me. I’m trying to convince Mr F that it’d make a wonderful early birthday present.

If you’re thinking of treating someone very special to a piece of jewellery then I would really reccommend DIWAH. We tend to treat our loved ones a little more than we treat ourselves and this would certainly be appreciated. Especially knowing that they’d be the only person wearing their design!

I have really enjoyed designing my necklace, which could only be described as a mixture between candy and punk. I’ve also loved working alongside DIWAH for this review. I would and will definitely use DIWAH again, not just for myself.

    wow..
what a lovely post.I find this idea of designing your own jewellery very exciting and unique. I don’t consider myself to be innovative in terms of designing my own jewellery at home. Personally I believe that Diwah is what I am looking for, as they will be able to design my jewellery based on my preferences. Thanks for sharing.
