Our faces are the first thing people see and is one of the main body parts we are most self-conscious of. If you suffer with acne scarring, breakouts, dry skin or an uneven skin tone then keep reading for the secret to softer, smoother, clearer skin.
I am speaking from experience for what has worked for me. When I was a teenager I suffered terribly with acne which left me with numerous amounts of scarring all over my face. I have seen doctors and dermatologists about the scarring and at the time acne issues, I have also used countless creams and potions to clear my skin and reduce the scars, both prescribed and off the shelf. I even spent nearly £1,000 on peels and dermabrasion. I was still always left with an uneven textured skin which makeup couldn’t cover. Little did I know I had my own secret in my cosmetic drawer all along!
The one common mistake people make about acne is drying their skin out. We are all led to believe it’s excess oils that cause the spots, there are countless reasons people get acne and breakouts. Here are the main reasons:
- Hormonal changes
- Dirt becoming trapped in your pores (usually from makeup or dirty fingers)
- Squeezing spots which causes the infection to spread
- Stress and tiredness
- Dry skin
Did any of these surprise you? Dry skin certainly surprised me! When I was a teenager I would do anything to dry my skin out, so my spots would dry out and disappear. I never understood why they got worse, causing more acne scars.
I have only discovered my secret about a year ago and I really hope that anyone else who suffers with scarring or any of the above can use my trick and that it’ll work wonders for them too! You must be patient though there isn’t a quick fix but it’ll be worth the wait.
Well my secret is MOISTURISER! I started being really over the top with my moisturiser every evening a year ago, hoping that it’ll help prevent me from getting wrinkles. Part of me assumed I would get really terrible breakouts from having moisturised skin, but quite the opposite! It isn’t even an expensive moisturiser, I’m using Simple moisturiser every evening and I really smother it on and massage it into my whole face for a minute or 2, then I pop on Vaseline around my eyes and onto my lips (hoping to prevent wrinkles again).
This isn’t all I do though, I exfoliate every evening with a muslin cloth and a cleanser to remove my makeup, I then of course tone, followed by the moisturiser. Once I stopped using makeup removing wipes and baby wipes (I know they’re quick and easy but they’re not good for skin) I started noticing a difference. My face felt much fresher and smoother, my makeup started going on much nicer instead of patchy. So here’s a summary of the products I use:
- REN hot cloth cleanser or Liz Earle cleanse and polish, at night (I use up a bottle of each and take it in turns, they last for a LONG time and come with the muslins, I would recommend paying that little extra as you really don’t need to use much product)
- REN or Liz Earle toner, twice a day (I do the same again and rotate the bottles, a little goes a long way with these)
- Liz Earle moisturiser, in the day
- Simple moisturiser, in the night smother it on and massage it into your skin
It was only last week I noticed how smooth my face looked and I started searching for all those familiar scars I was used to seeing, but I couldn’t find them. Don’t get me wrong, I will never be the face of MAC, but the difference is amazing. I can empathise with anyone who is self-conscious about their face and I really hope this can work for you as well as it has for me. If it does then I would love to hear your story!
