Venturing into the mothering stage of my life, I never realised how much of myself I’d be giving up. I didn’t even realise how at peace I was with giving these things up. For most of us mums it comes as a shock to the system, to not be your own priority anymore, but it’s a natural transition into a selfless person and mother.
Instinctively we put the needs of our little babes before our own, this means for many of us we never treat ourselves. We never take time for ourselves, this is something we all need to do more often. Dads too, but I don’t think this list will please many Daddys. But a happy wife makes a happy life…
I didn’t realise how much I appreciated the smallest of treats, nor did I realise how much I needed them. A little treat and time for yourself can really help recharge your batteries, which have been run down by relentless night-wakings. Whether it’s a soak in the bath or a new pair of shoes, you’ll feel all fuzzy with happiness and ultimately, you deserve it.
But where do you start? How do you treat yourself? (Or someone else)
Here’s a little list of things that we could all do with, the best part is, they’re all under £20!
An At-Home Oil Treatment for your Hair.
I started using Schwarzkopf Styling Oil a few weeks ago and have absolutely adored my hair afterwards. On a whim I bought this in the hopes it would extend the period of time in-between each hair wash and soften my dry ends. You don’t necessarily need this product, any hair oil will be the perfect treat for you. Even coconut oil.
Smother your hair in the oil before you wash your hair, then tie it up so it isn’t slick to your face. Leave on for as long as you like before showering. Kick back with a good book while you let the oil sink in to your hair. Once you’ve washed the oil out, roughly towel dry your hair and add a little more oil. Smooth the oil from root to tip, focusing on the ends of your hair. The oil doesn’t tend to give you greasy roots, it encourages your natural shine and gives you a gorgeous sleek look.
A Delicious Smelling Candle
One thing most of us mums have, is an addiction to candles. They look and smell so pretty. I have a Grapefruit & Cassis scented candle from Heart & Home and the fruity smell makes me drool. A little candle purchase is definitely something I love to treat myself to. This candle from Heart & Home is a gorgeous pop of colour with a unique lid. It burns for 75 hours, so that’s 75 hours of heavenly scented you-time.
Don’t scrimp when you treat yourself to candles, the brands such as Yankee Candle, The White Company and Heart & Home sell candles which last much longer than budget brands, with a scent that fills the room.
However, sometimes you see a candle which is perfect for decoration, there’s no harm in sprucing up your home with candles. You can find plenty of decorative candles in B&M bargains.
A Set of Soap Flowers
You can use these Soap Flowers from Heathcote & Ivory as soap, or you may feel they’re too beautiful to use and sit them in a bowl in your bathroom.
They can be used in a luxurious bath or as pot-pouri in any room. They’re extremely pretty flowers which will brighten up the room. Also, if you’re a blogger or photographer, they’re perfect to use in the background to make your photos really pop.
You make plenty of lists throughout your week, why not do so using gorgeous stationery.
Something that I’m really starting to adore is positive prints. They’re prints with inspirational quotes and little messages of happiness on them. It’ll be a treat that keeps on giving each time you look at it.
My favourite is a ‘Make The Most Of It’ print from The Calm Gallery. It’s certainly a special treat and is something we may need to look at every day. Especially when you relate it back to our devilish kiddies.
Bespoke Hand-Made Necklace
I recently discovered the fabulous company, Diwah and am currently working with them to create my own beautiful necklace. The unique thing about Diwah is that they not only stock a beautiful selection of hand-made Jewellery, but their website also allows you to create your own. Once you see their designs you will fall in love with their pieces.
The fabulous thing about creating you own necklace is that you can personalize it, it’s unique and you can create it to suit your budget. So why not treat yourself to a gorgeous piece of jewellery.
Think of a Hobby
I’ve recently started doing crafts, anything from upcycling furniture to making cards. Having a hobby really helps you to escape briefly and focus your mind on something. It also leaves you feeling a sense of achievement. It’s a wonderful feeling when you achieve something, other than raising your sweet children, of course.
A hobby doesn’t have to be crafty, it can be an activity, perhaps one you can do with a friend, while doing another favourite hobby, gossiping.
Mini Spa at Home
Every mother deserves a little pampering, some of us deserve a lot! Set aside one night a month, or a week if you can spare it and make that entire evening about yourself.
To pamper yourself from head to toe you can use the Hair Oil as previously mentioned, a Mudd mask for your face, a scrub for your body, a scrub for your feet, nail polish and an all over body moisturizer.
My favourite scrubs and moisturizers are from Soap & Glory. It’s the smell that really makes me feel pampered. The face mask you can find in every supermarket for 99p. When combined with a bath and your favourite robe afterwards, you’ll feel like a new woman.
I know, it sounds like hard-work. Exercising can be hard work. But think about that post-workout feeling, a buzz of achievement (we already know how wonderful this feels) and relief once it’s over.
Exercising doesn’t have to be a chore, it can be fun. You know dancing counts right?
Escaping with a Book
For every mum the must-read is of course the Unmumsy-Mum book. She depicts in the most hilarious way how tough parenting can be. With her book she’s not only created a more honest conversation between mums, but she makes us as the reader feel relief that other mums go through it too. Or other mums think it too, you know what we think, or carelessly say. You’ll laugh and cry, I cannot recommend this book enough to mums. Actually dads, it’s a sense of humour you’ll appreciate too.
If you ever need a little pick-me-up, but can’t decide on what, then pretend you’re planning a thoughtful gift for your best friend and you really want to make her happy and relaxed. Inspiration will soon flow.
It’s so important to treat yourself, whether it’s time to read a book, a visit to the hairdressers or if your treat is in the form of accessories and things that make you happy. A happy mum means happy parenting. You probably don’t treat yourself very often, and when you do, you appreciate it so much more. Everyone will notice your beaming smile!
